Webcasting involves lots of services. From streaming encoders, to cameras, to technicians, to vision mixers and a host of other services in order to deliver quality video transmission. Our experience is unsurpassed in streaming events. We have learned from over 300 broadcasts from weddings, brand events, conferences, interviews and sport how to live stream in our South African environment. Unlike “first world” conditions the Wi-Fi connectivity in South Africa remains unstable. That is why we do a reconnaissance prior to the event taking place. It is a critical component of our service. A stable tried and tested live streaming connection ensures your broadcast gets delivered where you need it and when you need it.

Three questions that affect streaming connectivity from your chosen location:

Bandwidth for streaming: how much do you need?

“How much upload bandwidth do I need to live stream?” is a common question addressed by our Services department.

Understanding factors such as stream quality, encoding settings, and other conditions are essential to configuring a worry-free and reliable live broadcast.
Streamed content needs to be encoded. Video and content that is not compressed consumes far too much upload bandwidth to support a reliable broadcast for viewers. As a rule of thumb we rely on 1 GB of data per hour for each stream of high definition video. The distance between the router and connecting devices, as well as the number of walls and floors in between, make a big difference. While a Wi-Fi signal can travel hundreds of feet in an unobstructed space, walls and floors can cut that distance by half or more. So too are the people who attend the event. They will all arrive with their mobile phones switched on which saps the frequencies in the room. We usually find that moving our routers outside the venue or in a high place better. This is particularly important if the room does not have windows.

Which are the Wi-Fi Channels, Frequencies and Bands to use.

We choose the best Wi-Fi connections that suit the event. Selecting a better least congested frequency is done during the setup stage but nearer the time of going live. You need to find a channel that is less cluttered than the rest. There is, however, one basic step you can take which may give you an instant speed boost: picking a unique Wi-Fi channel that no one else is using. Just like radio stations, Wi-Fi operates on different frequencies—and on two separate frequency bands entirely. We run some internet speed tests first from a computer that’s connected to our routers with an Ethernet cable. Then do the same test over Wi-Fi. We then set our routers to fit the spectrum that is least used in the room that we are streaming from.
